Been there! As a high school student, I endured dull accounting classes, making me question my choice of profession. Learning accounting is difficult when you have no real-world scenarios.

That’s why we start with a small service business that any teen can probably run – a lawn service.  The lessons are real-to-life from the years my first two homeschooled children were home.  Our son cut grass and our daughter created beach bags to sell.  This course draws on those two examples.  This is not theory we are talking about, it is real business accounting.

I’d like to take a minute to introduce myself.

Vicki McCay front porch teacher homeschool quickbooks high school middle school accounting small business bore teen dreaming class computer training

Greetings! I’m Vicki McCay—a wife, homeschooling mother, and dedicated accountant for local small businesses. My journey into the world of accounting began during my years in automotive (double-entry) accounting, and when my family started a 401(c)3 mission organization nearly two decades ago, QuickBooks became the go-to solution for our financial needs. The learning curve was steep, but with determination, I successfully set up the accounting system for the non-profit.

Transitioning into full-time motherhood, I seized the opportunity to be there for our youngest son when he started school. A chance part-time job as a personal assistant and bookkeeper unexpectedly came my way, leading to a unique balance of work and family life. Volunteering for Meals on Wheels played a role in this unexpected turn of events. Life has a way of surprising us!

Our educational journey took an interesting turn when we discovered our son’s unique learning style. Gifted, in his case, didn’t mean just smart; it meant learning differently. When he encountered challenges in sixth grade, we made the decision to homeschool. Drawing on our past success with homeschooling our two adult children, we embraced this new chapter.

As we approached my husband’s retirement, I explored options for our future. Homeschooling complements our lifestyle, allowing us to make the most of every moment with our rapidly growing son.

Driven by an entrepreneurial spirit and a passion for teaching, I find joy in sharing the knowledge and experiences gained on this unique journey. Join me as I navigate the intersections of family, business, and education, sharing insights and lessons learned along the way.
